Olivia Culpo’s Wedding Dress Controversy, Explained | ELLE (2024)

Just last week, Olivia Culpo made a splash with her very lavish wedding to NFL star Christian McCaffrey. But while there was plenty to admire about their Rhode Island ceremony, it was the former Miss Universe’s comments about her dress that really has people talking.

Speaking to Vogue, Culpo said she “didn’t want it to exude sex in any way, shape, or form,” for her wedding dress.

She continued, “When I think about Christian and what he loves and the moments that he thinks that I’m most beautiful, it’s absolutely in something like this: timeless, covered and elegant.”

To achieve this, she wore a custom-made Dolce & Gabbana design, featuring a high-cut crew neck, full-length sleeves, and a voluminous ball gown skirt.

Over on TikTok however, not everyone was impressed with Culpo’s comments about the gown.

What Did Kennedy Bingham Say About Olivia Culpo’s Wedding Dress?

In particular, wedding content creator and stylist Kennedy Bingham (who goes by @gowneyed girl on TikTok), took to the platform to share her thoughts. In the nearl 6-minute viral video (which, at the time of writing, has amassed over 5 million views), she explains that it’s not the dress itself that she has an issue with, but rather Culpo’s commentary about how and why she selected that style.

“If I were to just look at the dress, I would see a beautiful bride in a beautiful, simple, elegant dress…But it’s all the stuff surrounding the dress that leaves kind of a bitter aftertaste,” she began.

There is nothing wrong with wanting a modest wedding dress… But the way that [Culpo] was talking about this went beyond just wanting something modest for herself, and pushing this idea of what she thinks all brides should look like.”

She continued, “It has been documented that it does not matter what women wear, they will be sexualised if someone wants to sexualise them. So to treat this [as a] ‘sexless’ design is really odd to me…”

Bingham went on to note the many controversies that designers Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana have been embroiled in, including accusations of hom*ophobia and racism.

“It’s very clear that this was not a wedding. This was a conservative campaign,” she said, adding, “You took this disingenuous ‘pick me’ route that honestly felt more like you were thinking about your narrative than your actual marriage.”

How Did Olivia Culpo Respond To The Comments About Her Wedding Dress?

Of course, it wasn’t long before the video went viral online, and Culpo herself swiftly joined the chat. The influencer responded to a version of the video re-shared on Instagram, writing, “Wow what an absolutely evil person you are. I hope no one ever tears you apart in this way because it’s extremely hurtful. I love this dress, and it was everything I wanted and more.”

Her husband also chimed in, adding, “What an evil thing to post online. I hope you can find joy and peace in the world, the way my beautiful wife does.”

How Has The Internet Reacted To Olivia Culpo’s Wedding Dress Drama?

Online, the conversation falls into two major camps, with some seconding Bingham’s opinions, and others pointing out that a wedding dress is subjective, and shouldn’t be up for critique.

Those who resonated with Bingham’s analysis were vocal with their support. “The additional context around the dress IS so important in terms of commentary,” one Instagram user commented, while another agreed on TikTok, “This is a legit fair review. You’re so right.”

Others, however, weren’t fans of Bingham’s reasoning. “I think you need to find a hobby…or go touch grass. This is the perfect example of women being the biggest haters of other women. Let her be,” one user wrote on Instagram, while another chimed in, “You have invested way too much time and negative energy in tearing someone down. Her dress was stunning, and the wedding was timeless elegance.”

Something tells us this conversation isn’t over yet.
