The Last Man on Earth | Rotten Tomatoes (1) Jerry Renshaw Austin Chronicle A chilling study of loneliness and an acting tour de force for Price as the last survivor of a dead race, and not exactly the feel-good movie of 1964. Dec 10, 2007 Full Review The Last Man on Earth | Rotten Tomatoes (2) Jonathan Rosenbaum Chicago Reader Some would consider this version better than the 1971 remake with Charlton Heston, The Omega Man, but that isn't much of an achievement. Dec 10, 2007 Full Review The Last Man on Earth | Rotten Tomatoes (3) Kristin Battestella InSession Film Though at times dated, the intimate ruminations, needs for companionship, and personal versus society questions remain thought provoking examinations on the arrogance of man and humanity’s shortsightedness. Apr 19, 2024 Full Review The Last Man on Earth | Rotten Tomatoes (4) Kevin Carr Fat Guys at the Movies A somewhat faithful adaptation of Richard Matheson’s story that drags to a crawl with an aimless script. Rated: 2/4 Mar 9, 2024 Full Review The Last Man on Earth | Rotten Tomatoes (5) Matt Brunson Film Frenzy Will there ever be a truly fine adaptation of Richard Matheson's novel I Am Legend? For now, this will do, edging out Will Smith's fairly interesting I Am Legend and far outpacing Charlton Heston's terrible The Omega Man. DanTheMan 2 The first cinematic adaptation of Richard Matheson's I Am Legend, The Last Man on Earth is propelled into brilliance by Vincent Price's heartbreaking performance, despite its painfully low budget, which often results in numerous moments of unintentional comedy. The film manages to exist as an aggressively depressing and lyrical nightmare, taking all that was profound and painful in the source text and re-presenting it as a low-budget but evocative and funereal slice of semi-cerebral pulp. The film succeeds as more of a mood piece than a narrative one, however, that moniker is certainly challenged by the sloppy direction and poor pacing which almost derail the whole film. There's some great atmospheric lighting and production design, if extremely limited, it's ultimately a film that lives or dies on its central performance more than anything else. A chilling study of loneliness and an acting tour de force for Price, The Last Man on Earth is a great idea left amateur in its execution and only really worth seeking out for the vulnerability of its central performance. Rated 3/5 Stars • Rated 3 out of 5 stars 10/04/24 Full Review Audience Member I was really surprised at just how bad this film was. After reading reviews where people said this was far superior to the Omega man, I was kind of excited to see it.What an incredible let down.Between the campy over acting, to the horrible folly and sound track, I’m not sure if this is even watchable. The only thing worse was the pacing, and the lack of momentum.Vincent Price really seemed to just phone this one in. Rated 0.5/5 Stars • Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 07/06/24 Full Review Matt R Vincent Price is Dr. Robert Morgan and is the last man on Earth as all other humans have been turned into zombie-like vampires by a plague. Based on Richard Matheson's 1954 novel I AM LEGEND, the post-apocalyptic tale was influential on many including George Romero. There have been other screen adaptations but I'll go with Vincent Price every time. Rated 3/5 Stars • Rated 3 out of 5 stars 04/18/24 Full Review S R A bizarre Italian post apocalyptic movie all in English. It had potential, but so much of it didn't make sense and was half-baked. Saw on TCM. Rated 2/5 Stars • Rated 2 out of 5 stars 10/10/23 Full Review nick s Intriguing enough story to keep watching. Production quality was not great and action scenes bordering on comical. Rated 2.5/5 Stars • Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 10/09/23 Full Review CodyZamboni This movie beats Will Smith's version. Vincent Price's film is more intense, scary, and bleak. The low budget constraints just help to add to the authentic creepy, apocalyptic vibe. It was nice seeing Vincent Price playing a tragic hero, for a change. As the movie unfolded, like alot of viewers , I noticed a visual connection to Night of the Living Dead, with the black and white, stark compositions, the slow shuffling vampires, and the simple, but eeriely effective makeup fx.
